Sleeping most of the day made my feel better. My cough is almost gone. Overall, I think I'll skim past this without really being sick at all, which is a vast improvement.

I bought fixings for stir fry. And I started some pork and ginger and sesame oil and soy sauce and rice wine vinegar to soak and I bet by the time you got to my "to soak" phrase you'd forgotten where in the sentence structure you were because of how poorly I put this one together. I'm doubtful that was really a sentence at all.

I ordered some clothes today. I'm down one pair of shorts from a bad bicycle dismount recently, but I ordered four new pair, so I have a gain of three pair. Three pair doesn't work in poker, but it seems fine for clothing.

I've been thinking about Alton Brown's diet. It's interesting. And looking over my refrigerator, I'm doing poorly at eating my box. I need to work harder on that. Eating less from the store and more from my house would help a lot.

Ok, that cough was pretty strong, maybe it isn't almost gone.

    Alton Brown's Dramatic Weight Loss
I can't watch Good Eats except on DVD. I've paid attention to the internet, and I know that Alton Brown has lost a lot of weight, and he recently did a show on it. The internet summed up his diet as presented on the show as:

    Daily
    - Fruits
    - Whole Grains
    - Leafy Greens
    - Nuts
    - Carrots
    - Green Tea

    3 times a week
    - Oily Fish
    - Yogurt
    - Broccoli
    - Sweet Potato
    - Avocado

    Once a week
    - Red meat
    - Pasta
    - Dessert
    - Alcohol

    NEVER!
    - Fast Food
    - Soda
    - Processed meals/frozen dinners
    - Canned soup
    - "Diet" anything

Eat breakfast every day, no exceptions.

Possibly this was a list that Alton made himself, I'm not sure. I looked, and Good Eats isn't on Hulu. It does appear to be on some strange subscription service I've never heard of, but poking at it revealed that it doesn't appear to work, so no Good Eats for me there. I often think that companies which don't sell their products deserve to be pirated, because I'd certainly buy their stuff if they were willing to sell it.

Short summary of yesterday: I'm a terrible failure of a person and I should just hurry up and die.

Longer summary of yesterday: Got up, headed to an unnamed restaurant where I had a nice breakfast (I'm leaving it unnamed because the owner is crazy and freaks out if you talk about her business). From there I went to Supermart to buy a little food, and then to MSEC where I got into a land cruiser. The land cruiser took me to Corkscrew Canyon. From there, I walked South up and down hills, over cactus, through sand and rocks, until eventually I turned right. Then I walked up a hill, climbed up rocks, scrambled up rocks, crawled up rocks, etc up rocks, until eventually I got to the point where I could see that I wasn't yet at the top of Strawberry Peak. And I wasn't feeling it. I was much slower than everyone else, so I'd been alone for quite a while and they were all on top. It was demoralizing. So I shouted up until I was certain they knew I was going down, and I went down. Back down the rocks I went, over to the point where I could see how far I had to go to get back to truck. It hadn't seemed that hard to get to where I was, but from up there I looked out across a huge expanse of land, and in the distance I could where I turned right, and then to the left of that I could see all those hills I'd hiked over, and my reaction was, "What was I thinking?" All total I was out there for nine hours. I haven't offloaded the GPS, so I don't know how close I was to the summit, but it wasn't far. But in the end I didn't turn back quite soon enough. I think it was the rough terrain that killed me more than anything. But I should also be in better shape. Being alone on the North side of Strawberry with no one around and facing the fact that I was going to fail to summit it wasn't a great time of the trip. The trip down felt great, even though it was very steep and very treacherous. Most of the hike out was fine, even though I was slow. The last mile or so got to be very painful. I was definitely running out of gumption. All total, without having offloaded the GPS, I'd guess it was only 12 or maybe even 13km that day. I know I was most of the way up the mountain, and if I wasn't so tired it was probably only ten or fifteen more minutes of scrambling up to get to the top.

Yoga was hard today. I hurt a lot. I have a cough from yesterday too.

I've been very much a slacker since my surgery. I really need to stop slacking. I need to exercise more. I need to get into shape. Hopefully I will. I need to go back to Strawberry peak now, and properly ascend it. I've done it alone before, so I can easily do it alone again.

I posted my first You Tube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoeatFZv5R4

There is probably more, but I need to post to http://deathbymountain.blogspot.com/ too, so I'll end this here and go post there then maybe come back.

    Fun like the 90s!
Peck is in town, and we finally met up. Evan is in town too. I hung out with them, and Evan's wife and brother, and Bob, in the box canyon vicinity today. It was a lot of fun.

Then I took my new creme brulee attempt to Heather's house. We both agreed it wasn't creme brulee. She said it tasted like flan, and I agreed. By the end of a ramekin we both agreed it was still good though. Then we talked about Corportation RPG for a while, and she gave me some cook books and chocolate, then I met up with Peck, Evan, Wotan, Bob, Kathy, Lynn (I hope that's right), Evan's brother, and Kara. Plus an empty seat. We had food. My meal was $35 because I showed up fist and ordered appetizers for everyone.

After the meal Mandy (from high school) wanted to go to the Cap, and she was quite belligerent that I go with them. So I went. We hung out for a while and told stories about each and traded insults.

This is probably the best day I've had in years.

    More stuff
The creme brulee looked good at 55 minutes total in the oven. So for my future reference, oven set at 315F, boiling water bath, 55 minutes for this recipe. Since I never wrote down my old recipe, I should preserve it too. Oven set at 315F, 60 minutes, hot tap water water bath.

My WoW account ends February 4th. I'm certain it will come back for Cataclysm, but hopefully I won't raid. That will be a good time to clear ICC though, to see what's in it. It gives me a whole month to try and turn up elementium bars still.

Paying attention to my day, I find that instead of sitting at my wow-box playing wow, I've spent my day primarily sitting in my room hoping an email would arrive. I don't have a specific email I'm waiting for, it just seemed that an email was the best I could hope for.

I suppose I should use my day to read Corporation RPG instead of doing nothing.

    Stuff Happens
I just put creme brulee in the oven. It's a whole-egg recipe from Cristopher Kimball. We'll have to see how it goes. It was more involved than my previous recipe was, but it put a copper pan to good use.

My old recipe called for 60 minutes. It worked well at 60 minutes. The new recipe calls for 40 to 70 minutes. While the old recipe assumed my oven was at 300F, the new recipe appears to assume that I have no idea what temperature my oven is at. I'm going to test at 45 minutes to see how it looks.

I ordered another copy of the Corporation RPG rules from Brutal Games. That will put me up to three.

This game looks interesting and fun. My only hesitation is that a lot of the setting I find to be repulsive. I suppose that's good really. Once, long ago, in Cyberpunk 2020, the GM tried to freak us out as players. He put together an adventure based around the most morally repulsive thing he knew of: cannibalism. Unfortunately for him, we thought that was a great plot twist, and we had a blast eating at the restaurant. We made jokes as we carved up our teenage kidnap victim, we had seconds, we did everything he thought we wouldn't. He was traumatized by us. We did still complete the adventure of course. After a few nights of cannibalistic debauchery we blew up the Space Needle that the restaurant was housed in.

Charybdis has calmed down since Scylla was recovered, but even more, she's become a lot more friendly to me.

I have six avocados, and cilantro, and I bought a bag of chips. But my avocados aren't ripe, so I ate my chips.

Corporation RPG should be starting up soon. Around the first week of classes. I strongly suspect I won't cook. I think I'd rather depend on take out.

A Chart of Years and their Decades
This chart shows each decade and all the years in it. It is tabular, so it is easy to verify that there are ten years per decade. Since the years are sequential, it is easy to verify that all years are there and that they are in the correct order.

Now that I'm not playing WoW I'm finding I have a tremendous amount of free time. I sort of remember this from back when I didn't play WoW. But I can't remember what I used to do to fill up my time. I didn't really have any friends, just Jess Lynch, so I didn't take up my time with being social. I think I wandered around a lot more, and spent all the rest of my time hanging out at work.

I need to fill this reacquired time up with something. Not work.

Discover notified me today that my credit limit had increased by $4000. I'd already noticed and spent my card from $0 up into the new limit. I'm sure they love me. Especially since I spent more than I have cash on hand, so I'll have to carry a balance again for a little while. I'm terrible at saving money.

Today is ten years since the last time I was invited to a New Years party. I spent New Years 1999 in Maryland, so that I could easily see Washington D.C. get nuked by terrorists if it happen, and maybe see New York City get nuked as well. I'd flown in before Christmas, and driven to Disneyworld and back between Christmas and New Years. New Years dinner that night was at a place in Delaware where the menu only had two items, which roughly were, "meal" and "vegetarian meal". I was watching the second of belly dance performances (provided with the meal) around course seven when I suddenly realized I'd never thought to ask how much it cost.

    TSA: much scarier than terrorists
    http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/12/dhs-threatens-blogger/

The subject isn't quite right. The largest operating terrorist group in the U.S. is the TSA. They aren't scarier than terrorists because they are terrorists. Osama Bin Laden has done virtually nothing to terrify us in comparison.

People who can't close doors need to wear a warning sign so that we don't mistake them for capable human beings. The last time this happened I was horrified I'd lost a cat, but I hadn't, so I just spend an hour or two worried sick. This time, I saw the cat run out the door and it's gone. It was Scylla The one that liked me the most. Charybdis was getting better, but was still very afraid of humans. Stinky isn't very friendly.

In the few hours that Scylla has been gone Charybdis has been acting weird. They are sisters, and they spend a lot of time together. Or at least they did. Stinky is hanging out near the door she fled from, either because he wants to follow her, or because he wants her back. Either way, he's been affected by this as well.

Oh, and I'm not doing well either.

    Another Update! So Soon!
I'm eating an omelet now. It was almost two omelets! One 3/5 sized, and one 2/5 sized. But it all worked out in the end.

I'm still planning to go to the Asian Gardens tonight as usual. Of the three people who still come sometimes, two are on the Pacific coast, and the other is dead and being eaten by his cats. Perhaps if I just paid for everyone who came more people would show up again.

    It's cold today.

I think [info]eparchos died in his house and is being eaten by his cats.

I'm about to make an omelet.

Although I haven't found enough Elementium, I'm still looking forward to losing my WoW access.

Torchlight is fun in that mindless grinding kind of way that made Diablo II so great.

I need to put more effort into grinding the mats to transmute the portal to the secret horse level in Torchlight.

I discovered that strapping a Nalgene full of hot water to my cars steering wheel makes it startable in only about ten minutes.

That's all I can think of right now.

    Torchlight And Stuff
I discovered that Torchlight was available for only $10 online, so I bought a copy. I hadn't really heard anything about the game, other than the player gets a pet that can sell things. I did know that they were some of the people who wrote Diablo and Diablo II and there had been a mass exodus from Blizzard.

Having now played Torchlight, I can now say that it pretty much is Diablo II with the addition of a pet. I choose a cat. I taught my cat, If, how to summon skeletons and zombies. On the easiest mode I played through the game in two sittings. When I tried the hardest mode (but not hardcore hardest mode) I almost died in the town before I could enter the dungeon. Once in the dungeon I discovered it was quite brutal in there. It won't be an easy walk through that's for sure.

I think one of the voice actors is the same actor as one of the dwarves in WoW. I think the dwarven fortress is really Gnomregan in disguise. I think their enchantment system is a little too nice. I think their gem system is a lot too harsh. The random quest system is kind of cute, but really, it's just a chain of quests that are all pretty similar. I really thought the dungeon would never end. It seemed like they just kept dragging it out more and more the further down I went. And when I realized I had only used half of the waypoint tab I started to get really worried.

In other news, I broke another 50mm f/1.8 II lens. That's three total. At this rate they aren't cheap enough. No more cheap plastic lenses for me.

Despite my best wishes, no one I know appears to have died in a present fire while being pinned beneath a fallen tree. On the plus side, between going in to work and playing Torchlight in my spare time I seem to have mostly managed to avoid feeling bad today. This will probably end up being one my happiest Christmas' in well over a decade. Next up: New Years.
